Could Intensive Chiropractic Care Be Right for My Child?
For some children and families, a standard approach to care may not be the best fit. Here’s what we mean by Complex & Intensive Care at Hope Family Wellness, who it may be suitable for, and what you can expect.

💡 Key Takeaways for Parents
Every child is different: Complex & Intensive Care isn't defined by a diagnosis. Recommendations are based on your child's individual history, assessment, needs and circumstances.
Intensive care simply means a different approach to scheduling: For some families, we may recommend appointments closer together or multiple visits across a shorter period, rather than spacing care out in the usual way.
Your child's comfort comes first: We regularly welcome children with developmental, sensory and additional needs. Care is gentle, flexible and adapted to your child's tolerance, communication and comfort.
What Do We Mean by Complex & Intensive Care?
If you've seen Complex & Intensive Care mentioned on our website, you may be wondering what that actually means.
At Hope Family Wellness, we use this term to describe an individualised approach for children and families whose circumstances may require a little more time, flexibility or consideration than a typical appointment schedule allows.
Some of the children who come through our doors have complex medical or developmental histories. Some are neurodivergent. Some find new environments, transitions or physical touch particularly difficult. Others live further away and their families are looking for a way to make care practically possible without travelling several times each week.
There isn't one type of child who fits into this category.
And importantly, a diagnosis doesn't automatically mean that a child needs intensive chiropractic care.
We start with the child in front of us.
Which Children Do You See?
We welcome children with a wide range of needs and backgrounds.
This includes families navigating developmental differences, sensory challenges and complex or ongoing health histories, as well as families whose children have diagnoses such as autism, ADHD or PANS/PANDAS.
But we want to be very clear about something:
We don't treat autism, ADHD, PANS/PANDAS or other medical or developmental conditions.
A diagnosis may form an important part of your child's story, but it isn't what determines our chiropractic care.
Our role is to assess your child within the scope of chiropractic care, understand their individual needs and determine whether our approach may be appropriate for them.
We also recognise that chiropractic care may be just one part of a much bigger picture.
Many of the families we see are already working with paediatricians, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists or other healthcare professionals. Our aim isn't to replace that support, but to work respectfully alongside it.
What Does "Intensive" Chiropractic Care Mean?
The word intensive can sound daunting, but in practice it simply refers to the way care is scheduled.
A traditional chiropractic care plan might involve appointments spread across a number of weeks or months.
An intensive approach brings some of those visits closer together.
For example, depending on the individual child and our clinical recommendations, this might mean more frequent appointments during a particular period or, for families travelling from further away, arranging visits closer together while they're staying locally.
The exact schedule is never predetermined simply because a child has additional or complex needs.
We first need to meet your child, understand their history and complete the appropriate assessment.
From there, we'll explain what - if anything - we recommend and why.
Why Might Appointments Be Closer Together?
This is one of the most common questions parents have about intensive care.
There isn't a single schedule that's right for every child.
When we're considering frequency, we take into account the findings from our chiropractic assessment, the child's individual circumstances, how they tolerate care, their goals and how practical a recommendation is for the family.
We also reassess rather than assuming that the original recommendation should continue indefinitely.
Our aim is always to make recommendations based on the individual child - not simply their diagnosis.
What If My Child Doesn't Like Being Touched?
Please tell us.
For some children, walking into a new healthcare environment is already a huge experience.
They may find unfamiliar people difficult. They may not want to lie on a chiropractic bench. They might need to move constantly, avoid eye contact, communicate differently or become overwhelmed by touch.
None of that makes your child difficult.
And there is no expectation that they need to behave in a particular way to be welcome at Hope. Sometimes the most important part of an early appointment is simply allowing a child to explore the room and become familiar with us.
We can slow things down.
We can explain and demonstrate what we're doing.
We can involve you.
We can adapt positioning where appropriate.
And if your child has had enough, we listen to that too.
Building trust matters.
What Happens at the Initial Consultation?
Before making recommendations about care, we want to understand your child's story.
Your initial consultation gives us time to discuss things such as:
Pregnancy and birth history
Development and milestones
Previous injuries or health concerns
Diagnoses and existing healthcare
Sensory preferences or sensitivities
Sleep and everyday routines
How your child communicates
What they find difficult or overwhelming
What helps them feel safe and comfortable
Your main concerns and goals for seeking care
Where appropriate, we'll then carry out a chiropractic examination and INSiGHT scans.
These assessments give us additional information to consider alongside everything you've told us.

What Are You Looking for With INSiGHT Scans?
Our INSiGHT technology provides objective measurements that form one part of our chiropractic assessment.
Depending on what is appropriate for your child, this may include measures such as surface electromyography (sEMG), thermal scanning and heart rate variability (HRV).
We use this information alongside your child's history and examination rather than using a scan to diagnose a medical or developmental condition.
It also gives us a baseline.
When appropriate, scans can be repeated later so we can compare measurements over time alongside our clinical assessment and what you're noticing at home.
What If We Don't Live Near Hope Family Wellness?
This is one of the reasons we've developed an intensive option.
We know that some families looking for this type of chiropractic care may not live around the corner.
Hope Family Wellness is based in Bagshot, Surrey, within easy reach of areas including Ascot, Camberley, Bracknell, Windsor and surrounding Surrey and Berkshire.
For families travelling from further afield, we can discuss whether arranging appointments differently could make care more manageable.
That might involve grouping appropriate appointments within a shorter period rather than expecting a family to repeatedly make a long journey.
However, intensive scheduling isn't automatically suitable for everyone, so this would always be discussed after we've assessed your child.
Does My Child Need a Diagnosis to Come to Hope?
No.
Some families come to us with an established diagnosis and a long medical history.
Others simply know that their child seems to experience the world differently and want to understand what support may be appropriate.
You don't need to fit into a particular category before contacting us.
Likewise, having a diagnosis such as autism or ADHD doesn't automatically mean that our Complex & Intensive Care pathway is the right option.
Your child comes first. Their label doesn't.
What If My Child Is Already Having Other Therapies?
That's absolutely fine.
Many children benefit from support from more than one professional.
We respect the role of your child's existing healthcare and therapy team, and we don't position chiropractic care as a replacement for medical treatment, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, psychological support or other appropriate services.
Where appropriate and with your consent, we're also happy for care to sit alongside the wider support your child is receiving.
How Do We Know If Care Is Helping?
This is another reason assessment and reassessment matter to us.
Before beginning care, we establish a starting point based on your child's history, your goals, our chiropractic assessment and, where appropriate, INSiGHT scans.
As care progresses, we review rather than simply continuing indefinitely.
We consider what you're noticing in everyday life alongside our clinical findings and any appropriate repeat assessments.
If our recommendations need to change, we'll discuss that with you.
Is Complex & Intensive Care Right for My Child?
There isn't a checklist online that can answer that question.
And we don't think there should be.
Two children can have the same diagnosis and be completely different. One may love physical touch; another may find it overwhelming. One may cope beautifully with appointments; another may need several visits simply to feel comfortable in the environment. One family may live ten minutes away; another may be travelling several hours.
That's why our recommendations begin with your child's individual story, rather than their diagnosis. If you're unsure whether standard or intensive care might be appropriate, you don't need to work that out before contacting us.
That's something we can discuss together.
